Walmart opens 900,000-square-foot Stockton fulfillment center with more than 1,000 jobs
Walmart has opened its fifth next-generation fulfillment center, a facility of more than 900,000 square feet in Stockton, California, the company said in an Oct. 8 announcement.
The site will create more than 1,000 jobs, according to Walmart. It is meant to speed shipping and delivery to customers in California and across the West Coast.
Automation
The building uses an automated, high-density storage and retrieval system that brings products to workers, Walmart said. That cuts the traditional 12-step fulfillment process to five steps.
Walmart said the technology improves storage capacity and raises the number of orders the building can fill each day compared with a traditional fulfillment center. It did not give a cost for the facility or a daily order figure.
"This facility is an important investment in the Central Valley and a critical part of how we're building the next generation of Walmart's fulfillment network across the West Coast," said Karisa Sprague, senior vice president of fulfillment operations for Walmart U.S.
