Snap-on profit slips as diesel spike hits franchisee orders
Snap-on's third-quarter earnings fell as a sharp rise in diesel prices led franchisees in its mobile van channel to cut inventories, the toolmaker said.
Net sales slipped 0.6% to $1,183.7 million, reflecting a 2.8% organic decline partly offset by $25.6 million of acquisition-related sales, according to the earnings release Snap-on filed with an 8-K on Thursday. Net earnings were $243.0 million, or $4.64 a share, compared with $265.4 million, or $5.02, a year earlier. Last year's results included an after-tax benefit of $16.2 million, or 31 cents a share, from a legal settlement.
The company said results were "principally marked by the unprecedentedly accelerated rise in diesel prices, which in our mobile van channel prompted franchisees to reduce inventories."
Tools Group drags
Snap-on Tools Group sales fell to $471.5 million from $506.0 million on a 7.0% organic decline, and its operating margin narrowed to 18.0% from 21.7%.
Operating earnings before financial services were $248.1 million, or 21.0% of sales, versus $278.5 million, or 23.4%, a year earlier. Financial services operating earnings were roughly flat at $68.3 million.
Looking ahead
Snap-on said it expects 2026 capital expenditures of about $100 million and a full-year effective tax rate of about 22%.
