Rocket Lab pushes Neutron rocket's first launch into 2027
Rocket Lab said Wednesday that the first flight of Neutron, the reusable medium-lift rocket at the center of its growth plans, has slipped into next year.
In a regulatory filing after the market close, the company said the inaugural Neutron launch "is now expected to occur in 2027." It said the shift comes as the team "continues development and incorporation of process improvements," and that it is progressing through key manufacturing and testing milestones and will provide further updates as work continues.
The company did not give a more specific date in the filing. It posted a presentation on the Neutron update to its investor relations website.
The move confirms a risk Rocket Lab had flagged two months ago. In its second-quarter 10-Q, filed in August, the company said production of Neutron's Stage 1 tank was aligned with delivering the rocket to the launch pad in the fourth quarter of 2026, but that "the window for an end-of-year launch date is narrowing." It said then that it was balancing the first-launch schedule against entering Neutron into service as a system ready for full-scale production and high-cadence launch, and that exact timing would depend on first-stage qualification and other critical tests later in 2026.
Rocket Lab has said its growth opportunity depends on expanding its launch market with Neutron's larger payload capability. The 10-Q describes the vehicle as targeting about 13,000 kilograms to low Earth orbit in its reusable configuration, aimed at commercial and U.S. government constellation launches.
The same filing lists "significant delays in developing Neutron" among the factors that could hurt the company's business and results. Rocket Lab's smaller Electron rocket, which first flew in 2017, had completed 87 successful missions through June 30, according to the 10-Q.
