Nvidia pledges $250 million in compute for U.K. AI safety research over five years
Nvidia will donate compute valued at $250 million over five years to support agentic AI safety and security research in the United Kingdom, the company said in an Oct. 14 announcement.
The commitment works out to $50 million a year in compute access, according to the release. It will be delivered through U.K.-based Nvidia Cloud Partners.
Who gets it
Most of the compute will go to the wider U.K. AI safety and security research community, Nvidia said. A portion will support work with three groups:
- the British Open-Ended Learning and Discovery Lab, led by the University of Oxford;
- the Science of Fundamental AI Research Lab, led by UCL;
- Imperial College London, whose work will include safety engineering and robotics.
Government reaction
U.K. AI Minister Kanishka Narayan called the commitment "a vote of confidence in our world-leading strength and expertise in AI research," according to the release.
"With this $250 million commitment, NVIDIA will put accelerated computing in the hands of U.K. researchers to develop, test and strengthen safeguards for increasingly powerful AI," Chief Executive Jensen Huang said.
