Lyft agrees to $272.5 million California settlement over driver classification claims
Lyft moved to put a long-running California labor fight behind it. In a Form 8-K disclosing a Sept. 30, 2026 agreement, the ride-hailing company said it reached a settlement totaling $272.5 million - inclusive of attorneys fees, costs, and expenses - with the State of California and related plaintiffs over alleged driver misclassification.
The settlement is subject to approval by the Superior Court of California, County of San Francisco. Counterparties include the California Attorney General and the city attorneys of San Francisco, Los Angeles, and San Diego, the Labor Commissioner for the State of California, and two private plaintiffs suing under the Private Attorneys General Act. The covered period runs from April 5, 2016 through Dec. 15, 2020.
Under the agreement, plaintiffs release claims that are or could have been asserted based on alleged misclassification or other alleged labor-law violations during that period. Lyft can elect to pay over four years, with 5% simple interest after the first year subject to a maximum of $12.4 million in interest. The company said the deal includes no prepayment penalties or prospective operational commitments and is not an admission of liability.
Lyft previously recorded a $210 million accrual related to the matter in the fourth quarter of 2025. As of Sept. 30, 2026, it said there had been no changes to the third-quarter 2026 Gross Bookings, Adjusted EBITDA, and Adjusted EBITDA margin guidance it provided on Aug. 6, 2026, with results expected in November 2026.
Lyft shares last closed Wednesday at about $15.01, down roughly 0.4% on the day and down about 24.2% year to date.
