Intel agrees to buy quantum software company Classiq
Intel agreed on Monday to buy Classiq, a quantum computing software company, in a deal it said would give it a full-stack quantum computing platform.
The company announced a definitive agreement in a press release published on its investor relations site. Intel did not disclose the price. The deal is expected to close in the first half of 2027, subject to regulatory approvals and other customary conditions.
Classiq, based in Tel Aviv, makes a synthesis platform that automates the design of quantum algorithms and works regardless of the underlying qubit type or hardware. Intel compared that role to the one chip-design software played for classical computing decades ago, letting developers work without dealing with the complexity of the hardware.
Why Intel wants it
Intel has been investing in quantum computing since 2015, with a focus on silicon spin qubits made with the same kind of equipment and processes it uses for conventional chips. Adding Classiq's software would let Intel offer quantum processing units alongside its CPUs, GPUs and custom chips, the release said.
"Joining forces with Classiq transforms Intel's Quantum Computing Group into a full-stack quantum computing business," CEO Lip-Bu Tan said in the release.
Classiq co-founder and CEO Nir Minerbi said the combination "can help unlock the benefits of quantum computing and accelerate its adoption sooner."
What stays the same
Intel said it plans to keep supporting Classiq's existing integrations with other hardware platforms, so the software remains hardware-agnostic. The two companies will operate separately until the deal closes.
