Franklin Electric Raises 2026 Outlook After Q3 Sales Rise 9% to $633.6 Million
Franklin Electric raised its full-year 2026 sales and earnings outlook after third-quarter sales grew 9%, helped by price increases and recent acquisitions, even as higher material and freight costs squeezed margins.
The Fort Wayne, Indiana, maker of water and fuel pumping systems reported net sales of $633.6 million for the quarter ended Sept. 30, up from $581.7 million a year earlier, according to the earnings release it filed with an 8-K on Wednesday.
Earnings rebound from a pension hit
Net income attributable to Franklin Electric rose to $60.6 million, or $1.35 a diluted share, from $16.7 million, or 37 cents. The year-ago quarter included a $55.3 million pension settlement loss.
Adjusted diluted EPS rose 15% to $1.50 from $1.31. Operating income edged up 2% to $86.5 million, for an operating margin of 13.7%, while adjusted operating income was $95.4 million.
"Although we experienced margin pressure from higher material and freight costs, we continue to see encouraging order trends and strong customer engagement across many of our businesses," CEO Joe Ruzynski said. He added that the company was pleased with the early contribution from Cat Pumps, a recent acquisition.
Growth in every segment
All three segments grew sales in the quarter:
- Water Systems: $352.5 million, up 5%, on acquisitions, favorable foreign exchange and pricing
- Distribution: $226.1 million, up 15%, on higher volume, acquisitions and pricing
- Energy Systems: $91.7 million, up 15%, on acquisitions, pricing and volume
Profit trends were mixed. Water Systems operating income slipped 2% to $58.9 million, while Distribution operating income jumped 26% to $20.6 million.
Energy Systems operating income fell to $23.7 million from $25.4 million, but that included $4.7 million of acquisition-related costs and a $3.1 million charge from marking up acquired inventory to fair value. Excluding those items, the segment's adjusted operating income rose 24% to $31.5 million.
Outlook raised
Franklin Electric now expects full-year 2026 net sales of $2.23 billion to $2.30 billion and adjusted diluted EPS of $4.62 to $4.82, describing both as raised guidance.
Gross profit for the quarter rose to $224.0 million from $208.7 million, while selling, general and administrative expenses climbed to $137.2 million from $123.5 million. Interest expense increased to $4.7 million from $3.5 million.
Through nine months, net sales totaled $1.757 billion, up from $1.624 billion, and diluted EPS was $3.58, compared with $2.35 a year earlier.
Deal pipeline
Ruzynski said the company is focused on "disciplined pricing, productivity initiatives, and operational execution" across its global manufacturing and distribution network. In a separate 8-K, Franklin Electric announced an agreement to acquire Challenge Pumps, a mine dewatering business.
The company's Water Systems unit also booked $0.3 million of restructuring expenses and $0.8 million of acquisition-related costs in the quarter. Management scheduled a conference call for 9 a.m. ET on Wednesday to review the results.
