East West Bancorp posts record $2.76-a-share third-quarter profit as deposits hit a high
East West Bancorp set quarterly records for profit, revenue and deposits in the third quarter, as the Pasadena, California-based lender grew its balance sheet and kept credit losses low.
Net income rose to a record $382 million, or $2.76 a diluted share, from $368 million, or $2.65, a year earlier and $2.63 in the second quarter, according to the earnings release it filed with an 8-K on Tuesday. Total revenue climbed 6% from a year ago to a record $823 million.
Net interest income hit a record $719 million, up $34 million from the second quarter, and net interest margin widened six basis points to 3.49%, according to the earnings presentation filed with the same 8-K.
Deposits lead
Total deposits reached a record $71.5 billion, up 2% from June 30, with growth across all deposit product types. Chairman and CEO Dominic Ng said noninterest-bearing demand deposits grew nearly 15% from a year earlier, which he credited to the bank's small business checking strategy.
Total loans rose 1% in the quarter, and 7% from a year ago, to a record $59.7 billion.
Credit and capital
Net charge-offs were $22 million, or 15 basis points annualized, and nonperforming assets stood at 30 basis points of assets. The bank recorded a $45 million provision for credit losses, and Ng said that "given continued uncertainty in the economic outlook, we further bolstered our allowance for loan losses."
Return on average common equity was 16.3%. The common equity Tier 1 ratio was 15.3%, and East West declared a fourth-quarter dividend of $0.80 a share. It has $117 million of repurchase authorization remaining.
Book value per share was $65.97, down 2% from the second quarter but up 6% from a year earlier.
