Erie Indemnity Third-Quarter Profit Holds Steady at $182 Million as Commissions Rise
Erie Indemnity's third-quarter profit was essentially flat at $182.0 million, or $3.48 a share, as higher agent commissions absorbed growth in the management fees it collects for running the Erie Insurance Exchange, according to the earnings release the company filed with an 8-K on Thursday.
A year earlier, Erie Indemnity earned $182.9 million, or $3.50 a share. Pretax income was unchanged at about $232.8 million in both periods.
For the first nine months of 2026, net income rose to $512.8 million, or $9.80 a share, from $496.0 million, or $9.48 a share.
Fees up, commissions up more
Erie Indemnity earns most of its revenue from fees for policy issuance and renewal services it provides to the subscribers of the Erie Insurance Exchange. That management fee revenue rose $21.7 million, or 2.6%, to $847.0 million in the quarter, according to the financial statements filed with the release. Fees for administrative services rose 4.7% to $19.7 million.
Costs rose faster. Commissions increased $24.0 million, which the company attributed mainly to higher agent incentive compensation and growth in direct and affiliated assumed written premium.
Non-commission expenses fell $1.1 million overall, but the mix shifted. Technology and infrastructure costs rose $6.9 million on technology initiatives, including internal-use software impairments, depreciation and amortization, and cloud usage costs. Personnel costs rose $1.6 million on higher health care costs, and sales and advertising rose $1.8 million. Those increases were offset by a $5.8 million drop in acquisition and underwriting support costs, on lower postage and underwriting report costs, and a $5.5 million decline in administrative costs tied to lower credit card processing fees.
As a result, operating income before taxes slipped $1.5 million, or 0.7%, to $207.4 million.
Investment line
Income from investments fell to $19.9 million from $21.6 million. Net investment income rose to $25.4 million from $21.0 million, but the company recorded $5.4 million of net realized and unrealized investment losses, compared with gains of $1.3 million a year earlier. Other income rose to $5.5 million from $2.3 million.
Nine-month trends and dividend
Through nine months, operating income before taxes rose $18.8 million, or 3.4%, to $578.3 million. Policy issuance and renewal fee revenue grew 3.8%, while commissions rose $96.6 million and non-commission expenses fell $20.7 million. The decline in non-commission costs included a $12.1 million drop in professional fees and lower charitable contributions after charitable giving moved to the Erie Insurance Foundation.
Erie Indemnity declared dividends of $1.4625 per Class A share in the quarter, up from $1.365 a year earlier.
Shareholders' equity rose to $2.55 billion at Sept. 30 from $2.28 billion at the end of 2025, and total assets reached $3.66 billion.
The company scheduled a pre-recorded audio webcast for 10 a.m. ET on Friday.
