Cincinnati Financial Q3 net income falls on smaller investment gains; operating EPS steady
Cincinnati Financial's third-quarter net income fell 59% from a year earlier on Monday's report. The drop came from investment gains, which were far smaller than in the year-ago quarter, while operating income held roughly flat.
The insurer reported net income of $459 million, or $2.96 per share, compared with $1.122 billion, or $7.11 a share, in the third quarter of 2025, according to its earnings release filed with the SEC. After-tax net investment gains fell by $657 million from a year earlier.
Non-GAAP operating income was $443 million, or $2.86 per share, compared with $449 million, or $2.85 a share.
Underwriting a bit weaker
The property casualty combined ratio rose to 90.9% from 88.2% a year earlier. A ratio below 100% means the insurer is making an underwriting profit. Management said the year-ago quarter was unusually strong, and that this quarter is "moving closer to historical averages for the third quarter."
For the first nine months, the combined ratio was 95.8%. That is within the company's long-term target range of 92% to 98%.
Net written premiums grew 2% in the quarter. New business written premiums fell 12% to $315 million. The company said it is balancing growth against underwriting discipline in a competitive market.
Investments and book value
Investment income rose 10% to $325 million. Book value per share reached $105.42 at Sept. 30, up $3.07 since year-end.
The company's value creation ratio, which combines book value growth and dividends, was 5.8% for the first nine months, compared with 13.8% a year earlier.
Cincinnati Financial declared a quarterly dividend of $0.94, up 8% from $0.87 a year ago.
