Apple Brings Touch to the Mac With OLED MacBook Pro Starting at $2,899
Apple is putting a touchscreen on the Mac for the first time, unveiling a redesigned MacBook Pro on Wednesday with a tandem OLED display it calls PROLED XDR, a built-in touch sensor and starting prices of $2,899, Apple said in a press release.
The new MacBook Pro comes in 14- and 16-inch models powered by Apple's M5 Pro and M5 Max chips. Pre-orders opened Oct. 28 in 30 countries and regions, including the U.S., and the laptops begin arriving to customers and in Apple Store locations on Friday, Nov. 6, the company said.
A new display, and touch
The PROLED XDR display offers up to 2000 nits of peak HDR and SDR brightness, a 10,000,000:1 contrast ratio and ProMotion refresh rates from as low as 10Hz up to 120Hz, according to the release. It covers both the P3 and Adobe RGB color ranges.
Apple said the touch sensor is built directly into the display panel rather than layered on top, which it said reduces latency. The Dynamic Island also comes to the Mac, serving as a home for Spotlight, Live Activities and Siri AI.
"The new MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display is a monumental step forward for the Mac," said Johny Srouji, Apple's chief hardware officer.
Thinner, lighter and more memory
The 14-inch model now weighs 3 pounds, half a pound less than before, and the 16-inch model weighs 4 pounds, 0.7 pounds lighter, Apple said. Battery life is rated at up to 24 hours.
The machines support up to 128GB of unified memory and storage configurable up to 16TB. Apple said a Neural Accelerator is built into each GPU core, and that M5 Max lets users run large language models with hundreds of billions of parameters entirely on the device.
Connectivity includes three Thunderbolt 5 ports, HDMI, an SDXC card slot, MagSafe and a headphone jack. The M5 Pro version supports up to three external displays and the M5 Max up to four. The laptops run macOS 27 and can charge to 50% in 30 minutes, according to the release.
Pricing
- 14-inch with M5 Pro: from $2,899 ($2,749 with education savings)

Apple said the new MacBook Pro is made with 55% recycled content overall and is manufactured with 45% renewable electricity in its supply chain.
