Amazon, X-energy and AEP target 960-megawatt small reactor project in Indiana
Amazon, X-energy and American Electric Power have signed an agreement to explore building small modular nuclear reactors in Indiana, Amazon said in an Oct. 19 announcement.
The companies will target 12 of X-energy's Xe-100 reactors, which would add 960 megawatts of carbon-free power for the regional grid and Amazon's data centers. Each Xe-100 is an 80-megawatt gas-cooled reactor.
Amazon is a project development funder and would be the first customer to buy power from the plant once it runs, the company said. It did not disclose how much it is funding.
Jobs
The project could create more than 1,000 construction jobs and more than 100 permanent roles, according to Amazon.
Part of a 5-gigawatt plan
This is the second project under Amazon and X-energy's collaboration, which aims to add more than 5 gigawatts of new U.S. nuclear capacity by 2039. The first is the Cascade Advanced Energy Facility in Washington state.
Amazon said it invests in more than 40 gigawatts of carbon-free energy across more than 700 projects globally.
The agreement is to explore deployment. Amazon's announcement did not give a construction start date or a date for the plant to begin operating.
