Amazon backs Calvert Cliffs nuclear upgrade adding 190 megawatts in Maryland
Amazon has made a long-term commitment with Constellation Energy that will help upgrade the Calvert Cliffs Clean Energy Center in Maryland and add 190 megawatts of new carbon-free power, the company said in a Sept. 30 announcement.
The new capacity is expected to come online between 2030 and 2032, Amazon said. It estimated the added power is enough for about 147,000 U.S. homes.
The plant
Calvert Cliffs, in Calvert County, produces about 80% of Maryland's carbon-free energy, according to Amazon. The company said its commitment helps keep the state's largest source of carbon-free energy running for decades. It also lays the groundwork to explore next-generation nuclear technology at the site.
Amazon did not disclose the financial terms.
