Ameren Missouri files 2026 IRP with multi-gigawatt gas, storage, and nuclear build
Ameren’s Missouri utility put a long-range power plan on the table Monday: a non-binding integrated resource plan that maps multi-gigawatt additions of gas, renewables, batteries, and new nuclear while stretching some coal retirement dates.
In an 8-K, Ameren Corporation and Union Electric Company (Ameren Missouri) said that on September 28, 2026, Ameren Missouri filed its 2026 IRP with the Missouri Public Service Commission. The preferred plan targets reliably meeting projected long-term energy needs in a least-cost manner. Forecasted demand-growth assumptions for the preferred plan and high-load scenarios range from about 2.9 to 3.9 gigawatts by 2030, 5 to 6 GW by 2035, and 6 to 9 GW by 2045.
Disclosed additions include 2,100 MW of combined-cycle gas by 2031, another 2,800 MW by 2035, and 1,400 MW more by 2042; 1,900 MW of simple-cycle gas by 2029 and 2,400 MW more by 2045; 500 MW of natural gas fuel cells by 2030; 1,300 MW of solar by 2030 and 1,050 MW more by 2035; 1,500 MW of wind by 2040; 2,400 MW of battery storage by 2030; and 1,200 MW of new nuclear by 2040.
The plan would also extend two Labadie coal units’ retirement from 2036 to 2042, retire about 1,800 MW of gas-fired energy centers by 2040, continue efficiency and demand-response programs, and seek NRC approval to run Callaway beyond its current 2044 license expiration. The IRP is non-binding. AEE shares closed Monday at $99.39, unchanged from Friday and down about 1.5% year to date.
